Everything That Changed (New ECO)
The PMP exam changed on July 9, 2026. The three domains stay the same, but Business Environment tripled from 8% to 26% of the exam, which means roughly 47 questions. Most of that growth is a reshuffle, not new material: change management and risk content moved over from Process. The exam stays at 180 questions and 240 minutes, with more graphic-based and case-scenario item types.
The PMP exam officially changed on July 9, 2026, with a new Exam Content Outline (ECO). If you are studying now, this page is your map of what is different and what is not.
The one number everyone notices: Business Environment went from 8% to 26%
The three domains are the same, People, Process, and Business Environment, but the weights shifted noticeably:

Practically, that means roughly 47 questions on the Business Environment (26% of 180), up from about 14. Here is the reassurance: much of that growth is a reshuffle, not brand-new material. Change management and risk content that used to sit under Process moved to Business Environment. Format changes (same length, more complex items)
- 180 questions, 170 scored (was 175) with 10 pretest (was 5)
- 240 minutes (was 230)
- Two 10-minute breaks (unchanged)
More Emphasis on Agile and Hybrid Approaches
The distibution of questions accross project life cycles was adjusted. Previously, the exam featured 50% predictive (traditional life cycle) questions and 50% agile and hybrid. With the new 2026 exam change, this was updated to 60% agile and hybrid life cycle questions and 40% predictive questions. (This was to reflect what PMI research and surveys of project practitioners use today.)
New question types
- Practicum and hands-on: questions using tools, data, and case studies
- Case or scenario sets: one detailed scenario, often with charts, feeding 4-5 shorter questions
- Graphic-based: interpret charts, graphs, diagrams, and images
- Enhanced matching: drag-and-drop with images
- Point-and-click and pull-down items round out the mix
What this means for how you study
- Practice reading charts and scenarios, because the new case sets test interpretation rather than recall.
- Do not neglect Business Environment, since it is now strategic.
